90-MINUTE PRODUCTION INCLUDING TALKBACK FORUM

coming to a theatre near you

Book our multimedia performance and bring Create A Space NOW to your venue.  We create entertaining, unique engagements and educational discussions around a curated LIVE performance and films designed to raise awareness, help navigate difficult conversations, and initiate action, regarding race relations in America.

In this gripping performance, art imitates life. It holds a mirror to the audience and challenges the viewer through dance, film, and text to reflect upon themselves and their presence within the everyday narratives that are presented to them via social media, television, newspapers, politics, family and first-hand encounters. Witness a compelling evening covering topics such as white fragility, diversity and inclusion, anti-blackness, anti-queerness, and racial fear. It forces viewers to step outside of their own bodies and into bodies that continue to be brutalized, objectified and minimized within America. The tension of everyday life and the experiences of black and brown people are brilliantly woven together in ways that have yet to be seen on stage. Theatre-goers are left to decide if they will be active in the fight for this generation's civil rights or if they will simply sit on the sidelines.

“Power, knowledge, and truth stemming from art.” -  Peter Lam

“It’s not about whether or not you are black. It is about continuing

the conversation until it gets so loud, so contagious, that the only

possible outcome, is change.” -  Lauren Schofield

“It’s honest, raw, powerful, and necessary.” -  Christine Grounds

“This is where humanity lies.” -  Bianca Golden

THE MISSION

Create A Space NOW was founded in 2016. It is a multimedia and performing arts platform created as the result of a need to engage and further the discussion around #BLACKLIVESMATTER and social issues dealing with race relations in America,

in order to combat bias, racism, and systemic oppression.

MOTION + MEDIA = MOVEMENT

HISTORY

After participating in protests over Michael Brown murder in Ferguson, Missouri, Hettie Barnhill and her partner Robert Gertler, returned to New York City and in 2016, Hettie gathered a group of co-workers and friends to create a video addressing current issues of social justice and the justice system, not knowing it would register over 50,000 views in the first two days.  After seeing the impact of the first video, and having doors opened which encouraged this conversation to continue, they decided to create a platform that would become home to other conversations, media works, LIVE performances, talkback forums, and workshops.

A series of videos were produced by blending art and conversation, to create powerful content aiming to shift perspective and to activate viewers at the same time.

In 2019, Create A Space NOW produced its first immersive, site-specific theatrical experience using dance, film, and text.  It debuted at the 2019 Rochester Fringe Festival

at the Fielding Stage at GEVA Theatre Center and left audiences in a world of emotions.

Create A Space NOW wants to reach more people, in more places.  They plan to take this performance on the road, booking a 2020 College Tour.

There is much more in store, as Create A Space NOW continues to expand its content, reach, and impact within educational institutions and beyond.
